It’s official—Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones have separated. Rumors have been flying for the past few weeks about the celebrity couple finally ending their 13-year May-December marriage, but Zeta Jones’ publicist has now confirmed the news, saying, “Catherine and Michael are taking some time apart to evaluate and work on their marriage.” That was the only comment made on behalf of the celebrity couple.
The separation doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re headed for a divorce, as neither side has filed for a divorce or even for a legal separation. Sources are claiming that the never-ending stress in their marriage—like Douglas’ battle with cancer and Zeta-Jones’ struggle with bipolar disorder—eventually took its toll and that they’ve lost touch with each other. There’s also speculation that the celebrity couple was simply too different. For example, she likes the quiet suburban life, while he likes to be in the city. “They’re like chalk and cheese,” an insider told E! News. “The only thing that really bonds them is their love for the kids. But even then, they do it separately.” Douglas, 68, and Zeta-Jones, 43, have two kids together—a 13-year-old son and a 10-year-old daughter.
In the midst of their separation, Zeta-Jones is reportedly spending time with her mother in the suburbs. Meanwhile, Douglas was recently spotted in the South of France with a friend. The actor is reportedly still planning to head to northern France to attend the Deauville American Film Festival. Interestingly, this same film festival is where he met his wife back in 1998. He was instantly infatuated with Zeta-Jones upon being introduced to her, and they were married two years later.
What do you think: Can a brief separation mend their marriage, or are Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones inevitably headed for a divorce?
