It really is the end of an era. No one thought Stana Katic leaving Castle was possible, yet here we are. E! News reports that Stana Katic will not be returning to Castle’s season 9 next fall.

According to Deadline, the decision to cut Katic form the show came from the powers that be—ABC and ABC Studios! When asked about her surprising departure, Katic told Deadline that she didn’t want to distract from her experience on the show and thanked the fans and ABC. Sounds like a lengthy “No comment”—maybe the star was as shocked as everyone else.

Though ABC did make the final decision, they had nothing but nice things to say regarding Katic’s departure. “Kate Beckett has been a beloved character on our hit series Castle for the past eight years. We are grateful for Stana Katic’s talent and dedication to the series, and we hope to continue our relationship. Tamala Jones has also been an integral part of the series and we are grateful she was a part of Castle,” ABC said in a statement.

And no, that’s not a typo: Tamala Jones is leaving too, which means no more insight from medical examiner Lanie Parish.

Even though the show is called Castle, detective Kate Beckett has been an integral character in the show since its inception and is often the center of attention, whether people want to admit it or not. What will writer-turned-PI Richard Castle do without his muse—and wife?! There’s no word on how Katic will depart the show but death is not off the table in a murder/drama/comedy.

Castle’s season 9 will be shortened due to lagging ratings and with good reason. The show has been moved around so much that audiences can’t remember it and it runs the risk of running too long, coming up with outrageous plots.

Castle airs Mondays, 10 p.m. EST on ABC.
