The Billboard Music Awards date has been set and the nominees determined, so if you were wondering, “When are the Billboard Music Awards?” your wait for an answer is over. The event will be held on May 22, 2016, with a great number of celebrities in attendance, many of who will be serving as Billboard Music Awards 2016 performers. Read on to learn more about the Billboard Music Awards 2016 schedule.

This year, 2016, marks the 24th awards show held by Billboard magazine, which is also famous for charting the popularity of songs. The first event was held in 1989 in Santa Monica, California and ran each year on FOX until 2006. No show was held from 2007 to 2010 before the return of the event in 2011, now being broadcast on ABC. As for this year’s Billboard Music Awards location, it will be held at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, and will be the first televised event to be held there. This year’s hosts are Ludacris and Ciara.

The Awards

The Billboard Music Awards 2016 winners will be given awards based on traditional fare, such as the top artist for each genre, as well as other, more unique and specific ones, such as the top artists based on their own charts and awards for prevalence on streaming sites and social media. The reason for this difference is because winners are not determined by vote; rather, the finalists are determined by how they fared over the year on Billboard‘s various charts and rankings, which are also based on Nielsen sales data. So, while it’s still essentially a popularity contest, said popularity depends on fans’ wallets as opposed to a ballot. However, there is still a voting aspect involved, which is done primarily through social media.

This year, there are 42 awards with nominees attached and two special awards, the Icon and Millennium Awards, whose winners have already been announced. Celine Dion will be given the Billboard Icon Award—previously called the Billboard Century Award—which began in 1992 as a means of honoring an artist’s achievements over the course of a highly successful career; in other words, a lifetime achievement award. As for the Billboard Millennium Award, which is given to signers based on their contributions to the industry, this year’s recipient will be Britney Spears, who will be only the third person to be given it following Beyoncé in 2011 and Whitney Houston (posthumously) in 2012.

The Attendees

Of course, those two won’t be the only people receiving awards on May 22, 2016, as many artists will be there with hopes of bringing home a statuette or two. The Weeknd leads the Billboard Music Awards 2016 nominees with 20, including Best Artist, followed by Justin Bieber, Drake, and Fetty Wap. There will also be a great number of Billboard Music Awards performances at the 2016 event, with musical appearances by Rihanna, Ariana Grande, Nick Jonas, Pink, DNCE, Demi Lovato, Troye Sivan, and more.

There will also be a lot of non-music celebrities in attendance, with some of Hollywood’s finest serving as presenters for the main show. Those who will appear on stage to hand out the awards will include Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Alba, Kristen Bell, Wiz Khalifa, Mila Kunis, Steven Tyler, and Keke Palmer.

Despite how close we are to the day of the event, Billboard Music Awards 2016 tickets are still available, having only gone on sale on Monday, and range from $75.00 to over $900. So, if you’ve got a huge wad of cash burning a hole in your pocket and want to meet some of the music world’s finest while hearing some great performances, consider attending the Billboard Music Awards on May 22, 2016.
