Former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden announced his bid to run for president in 2020 on April 25, 2019. The spotlight has since turned to his family, especially his daughter, Ashley Biden. Before her father declared his presidential candidacy, all eyes were on Ashley for any signs that her father would join the 2020 race. Now that he’s announced it, speculation is rife that Ashley may have a major role in Biden’s campaign. She certainly has the appeal, as our Ashley Biden wiki will prove.

Ashley Biden Is Joe Biden’s Only Child from Second Marriage

Ashley Blazer Biden was born in 1981 to Joe Biden and his second wife, Jill Biden. She has two half-brothers, Beau and Hunter Biden, from Joe’s first marriage to Neilia Biden.

Neilia, their daughter, Naomi, and their two sons were in an automobile accident in 1972. While Beau and Hunter suffered critical injuries, Neilia and Naomi sadly passed away in the accident.

Biden’s sons persuaded him to remarry, and Hunter and Beau welcomed Jill Jacobs as their stepmother in 1977. By the time Ashley was born, Joe had been a Delaware senator for eight years.

Beau, who went on to serve as Attorney General of Delaware, passed away on May 30, 2015 at the age of 46, after a long battle with brain cancer.

Ashley Is a Social Worker

The former Veep’s daughter has always been a passionate social justice advocate. It was something that was sparked when she accompanied her father on the campaign trail and was exposed to the disparities in equality, race, and wealth.

March is Social Work Month. An MSW is more than a credential, it's a way of living, relating, and being. Proud to be a social worker. And proud of all the other MSW's I know. Thank you.

“But the thing that always stuck out to me was how Dad treated all people, no matter of their circumstances, the same,”Ashley said. “He would treat the CEO of DuPont the same way he would treat a custodial worker at a hotel.”

Ashley’s journey as an activist began even before she was 10. Disheartened by the state of dolphins getting caught in tuna nets, a young Ashley presented her senator dad with extensive research to help save the marine mammals.

That led Biden and then-Rep. Barbara Boxer to write the 1990 Dolphin Protection Consumer Information Act. Ashley herself campaigned for the act in Congress and was commended on the House floor by Boxer when the act was passed.

Striving to live as a champion for social justice, Ashley studied cultural anthropology at Tulane University before graduating in 2003. She went on to acquire a Master of Social Work in social policy and practice at the University of Pennsylvania.

She started her career in the field working as a clinical support specialist at the NHS Children’s Reach Clinic in Kensington, Philadelphia.

Upon returning to Delaware, she worked as an employment and education specialist at the West End Neighborhood House. She later spent five years as an education and employment liaison at the Delaware Department of Services for Children, Youth, and their Families (DSCYF). There, she helped develop programs for children in the juvenile justice, foster care, and mental health systems.

In her most recent job, she served as the executive director of the nonprofit Delaware Center for Justice, which helps children and adults impacted by the criminal justice system. Earlier this year, she announced her departure from the organization, effective March 29, 2019, sparking speculation that she would join her father on his possible presidential campaign for 2020. (At that time, it wasn’t confirmed that Biden would be running for president in 2020.)

She Is Married to Dr. Howard Krein

On June 2, 2012, a then-30-year-old Ashley tied the knot with then-45-year-old Howard Krein, an otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat doctor) and plastic surgeon for Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals in Philadelphia.

And every February, you'll be my valentine…

A Rutgers graduate, Krein received a medical degree from Thomas Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He went on to earn a PhD in cell and developmental biology from the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.

Along with his role at TJU, he’s also the chief medical officer at StartUpHealth, a senior director at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center, and a board member of the Biden Cancer Initiative. (Joe and Jill Biden stepped down from their roles at the Biden Cancer Initiative after Joe announced his presidential bid.)

Ashley Owns a Clothing Company

In 2016, Ashley launched Livelihood, a socially conscious, ethically produced clothing company, in collaboration with the online store Gilt. Its main collection consisted of feel-good, comfy hoodies.

The hoodies were sold in a flash sale on Gilt for a limited period. However, they currently can’t be found online. Livelihood’s online profiles also haven’t been active since 2017, but the company apparently hasn’t shuttered yet.

She still lists herself as the CEO of Livelihood on Facebook. Furthermore, reports claim that she left the Delaware Center for Justice to focus on her company. However, the status of Livelihood has not been confirmed yet.

As per Ashley’s Facebook, she’s now in her father’s native Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Joe Biden was born and raised in Philadelphia for the first 10 years of his life before his family moved to Delaware.

The former Delaware senator returned to his hometown to kick off his 2020 campaign. And from the looks of it, Ashley is actively supporting her father’s presidential ambitions.
