Just like conventional relationships, not all age gap love stories have a happy ending—sometimes things don’t work out, even with couples that you’d least expect. Just a few days after hearing that Al Pacino and his much younger girlfriend, Lucila Sola, were reportedly splitting up, another famous age gap couple is believed to be going through their own May-December breakup. Sean Penn and Charlize Theron have reportedly ended their whirlwind romance.
Penn, 54, and Theron, 39, were one couple who seemed to have all the makings of a perfect age gap love story. They were really good friends for nearly 20 years before they started dating in December 2013. And even with their 15-year age difference, Theron admitted that they found it to be virtually effortless to become more intimate with one another, adding in a recent interview with Elle U.K., “Putting aside that he’s my partner, he’s the love of my life.” Penn even seemed to forge a close bond with Theron’s adopted son, so it didn’t come as much of a surprise to hear that he famous age gap couple were rumored to have secretly gotten engaged after dating for just a year.
Unfortunately however, their age gap love story seems to have run its course, with news that the couple has decided to break off their engagement. Several insiders have confirmed the couple’s May-December breakup to Us Weekly, saying that it was Charlize Theron who wanted to part ways.
Although neither Sean Penn nor Charlize Theron have commented on the news of their May-December breakup or what caused it, rumor has it the problems started in South Africa, where they were working on the film The Last Face together, with Penn directing and Theron in a lead role. According to sources, their professional relationship started to put a serious strain on their personal one. “Charlize felt he was overly critical of her at times. Separating work and personal became hard, and the lines were definitely blurred,” said one insider, who added that it didn’t help that things moved a little too fast after they got engaged.
Although Charlize Theron was the one who pushed for their May-December breakup, Sean Penn is still reportedly not giving up hope that their age gap love story can still have a happy ending. The actor/director is said to be “eager to get back into Charlize’s good graces” and is willing to do whatever it takes. “There is a lot of love there, and Sean has told Charlize he is willing to work on his issues,” revealed the source.
