Get ready to see a lot of Margot Robbie this year, as the Australian actress already has four major films lined up for a 2016 release. And since all of them look like they could make some serious box office bank, 2017 could be even bigger for the young star! Below is a list of Margot Robbie’s upcoming movies in 2016.
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot: Coming to theaters in just under two weeks (March 4), the film is based on The Talibam Shuffle, author Kim Barker’s memoir about her time as a journalist in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The film actually stars Tina Fey in the role of Kim Barker, while Margot Robbie will be co-starring as Tanya Vanderpoel, a fellow correspondent who befriends Kim while the two live together in the home for foreign reporters. Being so close to its scheduled release date, trailers and clips are available online, including one in which Robbie shows her comedic chops (and her character’s desire to get laid).
The Legend of Tarzan: Starring Alexander Skarsgård as the titular “King of the Apes,” Margot Robbie plays Jane Porter, Tarzan’s love interest and, in Edgar Rice Burrough’s books, eventually his wife and the mother of their son, Korak. Robbie was always one of the top picks for the character (the other being Emma Stone) and she was confirmed to have landed the role in January 2014. While the character of Jane Porter was usually never more than a damsel in distress in the original stories, this 2016 re-imagining will likely have her be and do something more. The film is set to release on July 1, 2016.
Suicide Squad: Scheduled for an August 5 release, Suicide Squad is based on the DC Comics team of the same name, which is always a (rotating) group of criminals acting on the government’s behalf in order to secure a reduced sentence. For the live-action iteration of the team, Margot Robbie will be playing Harley Quinn (pictured above), a former Arkham Asylum psychologist who became the Joker’s sidekick after she fell in love with her patient; his feelings for her are never made clear, being equally cruel and nice to her. Robbie could be the breakout star of the film, considering she’s playing the second-most popular character after Jared Leto’s Joker (Ben Affleck’s Batman cameo doesn’t count).
Terminal: Currently in pre-production, Terminal will be about two hitmen taking on a mission that can only be called suicidal from a person they know almost nothing about; their only incentive is a massive payoff if they succeed. Margot Robbie will be playing a woman named Annie, who is described as “dynamic” and who may be hiding a secret related to the current job. Not much else is known about the film yet, including if it will even make a 2016 release, but anticipation is already building to see Margot Robbie in this latest role.
