She was Raised in a Single-Parent Home
Alicia Vikander was born October 3, 1998 and was raised in Gothenburg, Sweden to stage actress, Maria (Fahl) Vikander and Svante Vikander, a psychiatrist. Her father left when she was only two months old, leaving her mother to raise her alone. She has five half-siblings on her father’s side, and according to an interview with The Telegraph UK, the actress got the best of both worlds from being surrounded by her father’s big family (whom she visited every second week), and being raised as an only child by her mother. During the times her mother could not find a babysitter, she would bring Vikander to the theatre and she would fall asleep in the wings.
She Began Acting at an Early Age
The love for the Arts was instilled in Vikander from childhood. When she was only seven years old, she starred in a production at The Göteborg Opera, and performed in the play for over three years. She also appeared in several musicals at the Opera, including The Sound of Music and Les Misérables. Not only did Vikander know how to act, she also trained in ballet from the age of nine (in 1998), until 2004. When she was 15, she moved from her hometown to train in Stockholm, where she lived alone. At this time, she was able to travel across the globe for summer courses.
