At the 50th Anniversary event of the Harlem School of Arts on October 5, Alicia Keys and her mother, Terria Joseph, were both honored with the Visionary Artist Award. Keys, 34, was so touched by this that she posted an emotional message on Instagram for her mother.

A mother of two young sons herself, Keys shared an image of herself and Joseph on the red carpet at the start of the function. With it, she wrote, “Congratulations on the visionary award we shared tonight mama!!!! Without you, there is no me… Actually and Art-fully.”

She went on to thank her mother for playing vinyl records, working overtime to make ends meet, and for teaching her about “womanhood and everything in between.” Keys ended the caption with, “All I can say is thank you and it will never, ever be enough! Cheers to you mama!!”

Keys’ Instagram post echoed the speech she gave upon receiving the award. In her speech, Keys thanked her mother for being her “example of dedication, of loyalty, of determination, of dreams, of compassion, of kindness, reciprocity, and womanhood.”

The 15-time Grammy winner’s father left the family when she was only two years old, and she was raised solely by her mother. And although Keys has since reconciled with her estranged father, she once said on Instagram itself that she worships the ground her mother walks on.

There’s no doubt that Keys takes after her mother when it comes to raising her own two kids. For instance, despite attending last night’s event, she made sure to spend some time with them when she got home afterward. Shortly before the post for her mom, Keys also posted a fun collage of snaps that showed her rocking the stickers her son pasted all over her after the event.
