Amy Wright Is from Chicago

Amy Wright was born on April 15, 1950 and Chicago, Illinois. She’s the eldest of four children who were raised in Chicago’s Hyde Park.

Her father, Benjamin Wright, taught psychology and statistics at the University of Chicago. Her mother was a teacher at a nursery school.

Wright attended the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. She would move to New York in 1974 to pursue her performance career.

Amy Wright Is an Actress

Wright, who was a seemingly quiet child, caught the acting bug in high school. Her parents encouraged all four children to do what they loved, and Amy wanted to enter the acting industry.

She would study theater arts and earn a teaching credential at Wisconsin’s Beloit College. After moving to New York, where she lived with her great-aunt, she trained under Uta Hagen, the Broadway icon.

Wright built a career playing off-beat characters in theater, with her first professional performance being the part of Laura in a 1975 production of The Glass Menagerie at Pittsburgh Public Theater. She went on to star in Lanford Wilson’s Fifth of July on Broadway.

She has since acted both on and off Broadway, as well as in movies, since 1976. Among her earliest credits is a role in the 1979 version of The Amityville Horror, and she’s best known for her role in The Accidental Tourist (1988).

Wright Met Rip Torn in 1976

A then 26-year-old Amy Wright was playing Ophelia to Rip Torn’s Hamlet in a 1976 off-Broadway production when she met him. Torn, two decades her senior, was married to his second wife, Geraldine Page, back then.

“He liked me and wanted to be with me, and I was very interested in him, but I did not want to break up his marriage or steal him away from Geraldine Page,” Wright said in a 1989 profile. “I was somehow comfortable, well, sort of comfortable with the situation.”

They continued with a secret relationship, but it made for a very awkward time when Page, Torn, and Wright acted together in a series of plays. Wright even said that Page was willing to work with her for the sake of Torn. But it wasn’t very easy.

“I was jealous of her for certain reasons—for being a better actress, for being married to Rip and having known him for so many years, and she was jealous of me for other reasons. We both suffered.”

Page was married to Torn until her death in June 1987, reportedly of a heart attack.

Torn was notorious for his volatile personality and on-set altercations. About his irritable reputation, Wright said, “He likes to have a good time, to laugh and drink and eat. He likes women. People think of him as a hot-tempered person, but he is really rather gentle.”

“Our problem,” she added, “is that we come from different generations and different cultures. That makes it hard to communicate sometimes.”

Wright and Torn Have Two Daughters

Rip Torn was first married to Tony Award-winning actress Ann Wedgeworth, who passed away in 2017, from 1956 to 1961. They have a daughter, Danae Torn.

He married Page in 1963 and had a daughter, the actress Angelica Page, and twin sons, Tony Torn and Jon Torn.

After Page passed away in 1987, Torn and Wright married in 1989. They have two daughters together, Katie and Claire. The youngest Torn daughters live in New York.
