Billy Porter knows how to slay on the red carpet with his larger-than-life, groundbreaking lewks. But his best arm candy comes in the form of his husband Adam Smith, who complements the Pose star with his understated vibrancy. They couldn’t be a more perfect couple as our Adam Smith wiki will highlight.

Adam Smith Is from Arkansas

Adam Smith was born on February 3, 1981 to Samilou Smith and Joe W. Smith. He hails from Searcy, Arkansas, where he was raised with his two sisters, Adria and Allison.

Allison, a graduate of Harding University in Searcy, is married to a Mark Dennison. Adria Smith Castleman works as a financial adviser. Adam is a doting uncle to nine nieces and nephews from his sisters.

Adam currently resides in New York, where his husband Billy Porter is a big name in musical theater.

Smith Owns an Eyewear Company

Adam Smith moved to California and studied theater at the California Institute of the Arts. He graduated with a BFA in 2003 and also had a brief stint at New York University in 2002.

Smith didn’t work in the performing arts field, however. After graduating, he dove into the eyewear business, starting as a sales representative in L.A.’s Marchon Eyewear from 2004 to 2008. While there, he was a top representative who worked on the Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, and Emilio Pucci collections.

When he relocated to New York, he found a job in merchandising and sales at Chanel in 2008. But after only six months, he switched to Jil Sander, where he was director of U.S. sales for the eyewear division.

He was later the sales director at Dita Eyewear. But after six years of working for other eyewear brands, he launched his own.

Adam Smith has served as co-owner of Native Ken eyewear since 2016. The company founded by Tom and Christos Tsiplakos in 2010, later joined forces with Smith to relaunch as Native Ken.

Smith and Porter Broke Up Briefly

Smith was previously married, but that relationship ended in a divorce. A then-single Smith attended a friend’s dinner party in February 2009 at a New York restaurant called Sosa Borella in Hell’s Kitchen.

The host happened to be a mutual friend of Smith and Billy Porter, who was also present. Adam caught the eye of the Grammy-winning artist, who grabbed the opportunity to sit next to him that night.

Smith recalled they were “enamored” of each other that night. They hit it off that night and began dating.

As Porter recalled, “The first time we were dating, we were just, like, ‘hanging out,’ and all of a sudden, we realized, ‘Oh, it’s been seven months; that’s more than just hanging out!’ But because we weren’t conscious of it, it kind of imploded.” The result of that imploding was that the pair split after a year together.

Despite breaking up, they continued to remain good friends. “I remember saying to my therapist, ‘Now I know what love looks like, and it just walked out the door,’” said Porter. “I didn’t know what it looked like before, and it was after that that I realized: ‘Oh, s**t, that’s the one that got away! But now that I know what it looks like, the next time it shows up, I will be ready.’ I didn’t realize it was gonna show up as the same person—but I’m grateful that it did!”

As Porter said, they rekindled their relationship in 2015. It happened on Porter’s birthday when they were driving to dinner after watching Hamilton. Smith was determined to give their romance another shot and Porter “felt it, and the tears came, and I pulled over, and he [Smith] said, ‘I love you, and I’ve always loved you, and if there’s any chance, I would like another shot—I would like us to have another shot at this,’” Porter detailed. “He was the one that got away—so it wasn’t hard. The yes came easy and immediately!”

Smith and Porter Married in 2017

Two years after getting back together, Smith and Porter tied the knot after a 16-day engagement. Porter popped the question on December 29, 2016, during a double date when they were vacationing in London.

Immediately after their engagement, the couple decided they wanted to wed before then-President elect Donald Trump assumed office on January 20, 2017. They wanted their wedding to happen during the Obama administration that had championed marriage equality.

“It was about making sure that that statement was made, because as gay men, we still have to be visible. We still have to show the world that this is what our love looks like; it’s just like yours. We have to say that out loud,” Porter said.

So Smith planned a wedding in two weeks, and they married on January 14, 2017. The intimate ceremony at a friend’s Manhattan penthouse had only 45 guests in attendance. MaryMartha Ford-Dieng, Porter’s sister, became a Universal Life minister to officiate her brother’s wedding.

Smith and Porter wore suits from their closets and celebrated with champagne and sweets from Empire Cakes.

Kids aren’t on this couple’s mind, though. They are content being the fun “guncles” to their many nieces and nephews.
