Station 19, the Grey’s Anatomy spin-off, is the latest offering from Shonda Rhimes that has us hooked. Alberto Frezza’s Ryan Tanner makes up one-third of a classic Shondaland love triangle on the show. But apart from looking gorgeous on TV and being a talented actor, Frezza is an amazing human. Alberto Frezza Spent His Early Life in Ethiopia
Alberto Frezza was born in Milan, Italy on May 23, 1989. He is of Italian descent but moved to Ethiopia, where he was raised, when he was a month old. He now lives in Los Angeles where his career is based.
Alberto was the youngest and only son of three children born to his Ethiopian-born parents. His father, Adalberto Frezza, was a race car driver and shared his passion for fast cars with Alberto.
After living in Ethiopia for 15 years, he moved back to his home country in high school. In Italy, he was considered Ethiopian, and in Ethiopia, he was considered Italian.
Though he’s not disconnected from his Italian roots, he also grew an affinity for Ethiopian culture. He attended the International Community School of Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, which broadened his cultural scope.
He’s also fluent in Amharic, the most widespread language spoken in Ethiopia. He also appears to be fairly fluent in Italian.
He embraces the many diverse cultures he was exposed to, but also struggled with his cultural identity as a child. “It took me a number of years to just accept that fact that I was lucky enough to say that I came from two different places,” he recalled.
Frezza Wanted to Be a Soccer Player
Some of Frezza’s fondest childhood memories involve soccer. He spent a lot of time with his friends playing soccer at Circolo Juventus, a soccer club in Addis Ababa.
Even his Instagram and Twitter activity show he’s a soccer maniac. Frezza looks to be a fan of Juventus F.C., the Italian soccer club based in Turin.
Frezza’s initial career trajectory was moving towards professional soccer, but he’d also wanted to be an actor since he was a child. He put acting on hold until after high school, because he wanted to play soccer before trying his alternate career plan.
Stand by Me Inspired Frezza to Become an Actor
Frezza’s parents had the 1986 coming-of-age classic Stand by Me on VHS, which sparked a love for acting in a young Alberto. He watched and re-watched the movie several times.
The dialogue from Stand by Me is not only fresh in Frezza’s mind even today, but back then, he was beginning to act like the characters, too—something that prompted his parents to confiscate the movie. Nonetheless, he had caught the acting bug and his soccer dreams were sidelined.

“River Phoenix, who plays one of the lead roles in the movie, was my inspiration. He definitely is the one who opened the doors to acting for me, and I will forever be grateful to him for that performance. It changed my life,” Frezza said about what made him plunge into acting.
Shortly before completing his high school education in Milan, Frezza met a representative from the New York Film Academy. When the opportunity presented itself, he moved to the U.S. and enrolled in the film and acting school.
After living in New York for two years, Frezza pursued his Hollywood dreams in L.A., starting with short movies. Among the earliest credits he’s known for is his single-episode appearance in the Charlie’s Angels TV reboot.
After multiple other appearances in videos and movies, he bagged his breakout role in Dead of Summer as Garrett Sykes.
He had more appearances in TV shows, including playing serial killer William Lynch in Criminal Minds season 13 in 2017.
Frezza’s scored his biggest role to date in the Grey’s Anatomy spin-off, Station 19. Though he’s not a firefighter in this series, his character, police officer Ryan Tanner, is the protagonist Andy’s (Jaina Lee Ortiz) childhood friend and potential love interest.
Frezza even appeared in an episode of the short-lived Fox series Touch. It marked one of the highlights of his career because he got to work with Kiefer Sutherland, who was one of the child actors in Stand by Me.
He often says he’s drawn towards darker characters much like Heath Ledger’s Joker in The Dark Knight and his character on Criminal Minds. Probably the effect of Stand by Me.
He’s a Passionate Environmentalist
Frezza’s Instagram activity is testimony to both his football and environmental passions. His love for the environment appears to stem from his days in Ethiopia, where he often spent time in the Lake Langano area.
He confessed in an interview that the lake has changed drastically in the recent years, which doesn’t sit well with him. “The building of all the resorts and overfishing has destroyed the ecosystem of the lake, which makes me worry for the future generations in that area,” he said.
He’s also an avid photographer and diver. He’s into photography with drones as well. His Instagram displays some of his nature photography skills and he has occasionally mentioned that his dream is to get more into photographing nature.
Not only does he advocate for the conservation of beautiful animals like elephants, lions, and sharks, but he also shares some of his favorite environmental documentaries.
In one post, he shared an incident where he had the good fortune of finding recently hatched baby turtles at a beach where he was with his friends. Frezza and his friends rescued these baby turtles, who were crawling towards human habitation, and guided them to the sea.
