Joanie Sprague is the new carpenter joining TLC’s Trading Spaces season 10, premiering on March 16 at 8:00 p.m. EST. But she’s not exactly an unfamiliar face to many. She studied economics and computer science at the University of Findlay in Ohio. She went to Findlay because her father was going to seminary there and her affiliation with the local church gave her a better tuition rate.
ANTM fans will remember that Joanie’s dad, John Dodds, was a preacher and wasn’t aware that she had a side career as a cage dancer until she revealed it on TV.
She Was a Runner-Up on America’s Next Top Model
Joanie dreamed of becoming a model from a young age. So she dropped out of college and moved to New York after 9/11 to pursue a modeling career. On her dad’s insistence, she returned to Findlay and completed her degree before jumping back into modeling again.
When she was 24 years old, Joanie was a contestant on Tyra Banks’ flagship show, America’s Next Top Model (cycle 6), in 2006. During her time on the show, she became famous for her old Hollywood, Grace Kelly-esque looks in photographs and clashing with Jade Cole, the most polarizing contestant in the show’s history.

But Joanie is most memorable for getting her “snaggletooth” fixed on reality TV. Tyra Banks had Joanie and Danielle Evans get hours-long, painful dental work to cosmetically fix their teeth.
While makeovers are the best and most dramatic part of ANTM, never in the show’s history has Tyra sent a contestant to get a cosmetic fix like Joanie’s and Danielle’s. Both girls went on to be top 2 finalists and Joanie lost to Danielle in the Thailand finale.
After her run on ANTM, Joanie continued modeling internationally while also delving into acting. She’s a SAG/AFTRA actress and has worked in movies like Lone Star Trixie and Bigfoot The Movie.
She continues to post #TBT pictures on Instagram from her time on ANTM and her modeling days.
Joanie briefly worked as an office manager and receptionist at Urban Decay Cosmetics in Newport Beach between 2013 and 2015. She also has a side career as an insurance agent.

Joanie Hosted Run My Renovation on the DIY Network
Over the years, ANTM alums have branched out into other successful careers. But it may be unexpected to see the former model Joanie turn into a carpenter.
For Joanie, who always knew that her modeling career had a shelf life, woodwork was a natural transition. Growing up, Joanie and her dad would fix a lot of stuff around the house, making her skilled with the drill.
While modeling took her around the world, she didn’t spare any opportunity to use her home improvement skills. She repaired the drywall in her apartment herself, did tile work, and became a licensed contractor.
She learned construction management at Pellissippi State Community College in Tennessee in 2011. Joanie is now based in California, where she runs her business Neat Freaks LA. Her shop specializes in closet and home organizing and styling.
Her thriving business and modeling fame led her friend to make a tape of her working on a project. The friend sent the tape to the DIY Network and soon, she was auditioning for a show.
It was not long before this charming DIY girl landed her first home improvement gig on TV. She was a co-host on DIY Network’s Run My Renovation and later joined the rebooted season of Trading Spaces on TLC in 2018, with fellow carpenter Brett Tutor.
Joanie is breaking every kind of stereotype with her work, but does have her fair share of hardships in the male-dominated industry. The hardest part of her job, according to her, is: “People don’t take you seriously and give you the crooked look when you want to charge them a reasonable rate. I don’t think the majority of people understand what custom furniture actually costs.”
Nonetheless, she’s good at her job and encourages more women to pick up power tools. Joanie even teaches tool and building basics classes around the country. She has two apprentices, too.
Joanie Is Married to Former Footballer, Chris Sprague
Joanie tied the knot with Chris Sprague on September 19, 2015. Her husband is a coach at CrossFit Balboa in California.
Now Joanie raves about CrossFit, and we assume it’s the couple’s favorite activity together. Joanie also built the bathrooms for her husband’s CrossFit gym.
Before turning into a fitness coach, Chris had a successful athletic career. He competed in track and field, and played soccer and football.
He went to Duke University on a football scholarship and had a brief stint in the NFL. As a senior, he was invited to workouts with NFL teams on Pro Day. He also performed private workouts as a free agent with the Seattle Seahawks and Philadelphia Eagles.
However, injuries derailed Chris’ football career. Since then, he’s focused more on health and fitness. He now works with athletes and also people who are rehabilitating from surgeries.
