15 Important Skills Every Single Man Should Have

15 Important Skills Every Single Man Should Have

There are just some things that every man should know how to do, not just to get ahead in the dating game, but to get ahead in life.

1. How to Get a Bartender’s Attention

When you offer to buy a beautiful woman a drink, the last thing you want is to be ignored by the bartender as the two of you stand impatiently at the bar. Every man should know how to command attention at a busy bar. How do you do that? Position yourself between two bartenders and make eye contact. Have your money in hand, but don’t wave it in a bartender’s face—they’re not strippers and that’ll just piss them off. And never, ever snap your fingers at a server—you’ll just look like a condescending jerk. It’s also good practice to tip big the first time; a good bartender will remember that and will probably serve you faster when you’re ready for the next round.

2. How to Give a Proper Massage

Women love massages. Enough said. Start at the shoulders and work your way down—you never know where a good massage will lead. And if you’re actually good at it, she’ll just keep coming back for more. It’s a win-win!

3. How to Use a Bottle Opener/Corkscrew

If you really want to impress her, learn how to open a non-twist-off beer bottle cap with the edge of a table or the back of a lighter. Just make sure to actually master it before trying to use it as a party trick.

4. How to Order Wine

While on the topic of drinks, every gentleman should know how to order a decent bottle or glass of wine. You don’t need to be a sommelier or world-class connoisseur of fine wines, but at least know the difference between a chardonnay and pinot grigio, or a malbec and zinfandel.

5. How to Cook

I have yet to find a woman who doesn’t appreciate a man who can cook, and I mean more than Kraft Dinner and Eggo waffles. I’m not saying you need to be a five-star chef, but having a few skills in the kitchen will most certainly work in your favor. It’s true; no woman can resist a man who puts in the time and effort to prepare a meal for her every once in a while. One plate of pasta—that’s all it takes! Seriously.

15 Important Skills Every Single Man Should Have6. How to Change a Tire and Do Basic Car Maintenance

Most women will naturally assume that you know a thing or two about cars, so you should at least know the basics, like how to change a flat or know when you’re ready for an oil change. Be the guy she calls when she’s in a pinch.

7. How to Do Laundry

Unless you still live with your mother, there’s no reason to not know how to do your own laundry. You may never need to actually use this skill, but it’s a useful one to have nonetheless. Not only will your girlfriend be impressed that you can help out, but she won’t have to worry about you handling her delicates or shrinking her favorite sweater.

8. How to Manage Finances

How do you expect to spoil and pamper a woman if you can’t stay on top of your own finances? Budgeting is sexy. Debt isn’t. Neither is bankruptcy. Enough said.

9. How to Do Basic Work Around the House

Every man should know how to do things around the house, like changing a lightbulb, painting, patching a hole in the wall, unclogging a sink, hanging a light fixture, drilling a hole in the wall, and retiling.

10. How to Make Travel Arrangements (or At Least Plan a Date)

Women want a man who can take control. If you really want to get in her good books, plan a thoughtful, romantic getaway where all she needs to do is relax and enjoy herself. If you can pull it off, trust me she’ll have no problem showing you her appreciation.

11. How to Use Proper Table Etiquette

I hate to sound like Miss Manners, but don’t scarf down your food, chew or talk with your mouth open (or full), or slouch in your chair. Make sure you pull out your date’s chair for her, learn how to use forks in the right order, and say please “please and “thank you.” Proper table etiquette is a basic skill a lot of men seem to have forgotten.

12. How to Tie a Tie

Clip-on ties are for children and no grown man should ever have to resort to wearing one. It amazes me to think that there are grown up men out there who still don’t know how to tie a tie—and that means knowing how to tie a Half Windsor, Windsor, Double Knot, Double Cross Knot, etc. Not knowing how to tie a tie is almost as bad as not knowing how to tie your shoelaces.

13. How to Pick Out a Good Pair of Shoes

Speaking of shoes, women notice them…every single time. Research shows that one of the first things women look at is your shoes. It’s like they have this innate ability to look past everything else and focus solely (no pun intended) on your feet. So if you put in 110% on your outfit, but don’t have the footwear to match, game over.

14. How to Pick Out a Gift

“It’s the thought that counts” means you did more than just remember—you actually put thought into it. Women like to be spoiled and pampered, so learn how to do it right. I understand gift giving can feel like rocket science for some guys, but all you need to do is learn how to listen, or at least know who to ask.

15. How to Make Conversation

You’ll inevitably find yourself in a situation where you’re forced to make conversation with someone you really have no interest in talking to. But it’s a skill that’ll get you far in life, whether it’s landing you a new business opportunity, striking up a conversation with the hot girl at the bar, or meeting her parents for the first time.
