Over the last few months Gomez has been performing on stages all over the world to promote and share her Revival album. The reason for her break is to take care of herself. Gomez told People in an exclusive statement:

“As many of you know, around a year ago I revealed that I have lupus, an illness that can affect people in different ways. I’ve discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges. I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off. Thank you to all my fans for your support. You know how special you are to me, but I need to face this head on to ensure I am doing everything possible to be my best. I know I am not alone by sharing this, I hope others will be encouraged to address their own issues.”

The Diagnosis

She opened up about her diagnosis to Billboard in October of last year saying, “I was diagnosed with lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy. That’s what my break was really about. I could’ve had a stroke.” Many people questioned her reasons for taking a break, linking it to drug or alcohol abuse. “I wanted so badly to say, ‘You guys have no idea. I’m in chemotherapy. You’re a**holes.’ I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again.”

When she did finally regain her confidence, she blew us away with her incredible stage performances on her Revival World Tour. The tour would have ended December 18, however, her personal life is of top priority right now.

Sister Scarlett

In regards to the questions about Gomez’ sister, there is nothing new on the subject. In December 2011, her mother was expecting a girl named Scarlett, however, when she suffered a miscarriage, Gomez took some time away to be with her family. She received so much support from her fans, they even created #ScarlettTeefey to encourage her. Selena Gomez’ sister Scarlett Teefey would have been the first child of Brian Teefey, Gomez’ stepfather, and her mother Mandy. The couple married when Gomez was five years old.

It seems Gomez has had her fair share of struggles through her 24 years of life, but she continues to stand strong, and take the time she needs to recover during her moments of weakness. She is a huge inspiration to so many people, young and old. We hope this hiatus will be full of healing, comfort and peace.
